2008 RECRUITING CLASSES ANNOUNCED

A total of 77 student-athletes signed letters of intent to play at Great West Football Conference schools in 2008, the 5 members of the league released on Wednesday, February 6, the first days players can sign National Letters of Intent. Southern Utah and first-year head coach Ed Lamb signed a league-high 17 players on the first day, while Cal Poly, which finished 7-4 overall in 2007, signed 16. Heading into its fifth year, the Great West has been rated among the top Football Championship Subdivision teams for the first four years of existence. But the league will have a new look in 2008 with two new teams entering the conference lineup - the University of North Dakota and the University of South Dakota - to take the place of the departed North Dakota State and South Dakota State. The Coyotes and the Fighting Sioux have both advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs within the last three years and have their first Division I recruiting classes in place. (more)

2007 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM NAMED

In the Great West Football Conference, athletics and academics do indeed co-exist and it is proven in the 2007 All-Academic team, released today by the conference office. No fewer than 11 members named to the Great West all-Conference teams were named to the all-Academic team, including a record eight members of the first team. South Dakota State led all Great West members with 16 student-athletes named to the academic squad, led by first-team all-league selections Mitch Erickson, an offensive lineman who has earned a 3.352 grade point average in Mechanical Engineering, kicker Parker Douglass, who besides kicks game-winning field goals, boasts a 3.776 grade point average in Biology, running back Cory Koenig, who has a 3.770 GPA in Biology, and linebacker Jimmy Rogers, who has a 3.209 grade point average in HPER. Koenig was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American first team earlier this year, while Douglass was named to the second team for the second straight season. (more)

SIX LEAGUE PLAYERS NAMED TO 2007 SPORTS NETWORK FCS ALL-AMERICA TEAM

Six Great West players were named to the 2007 Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision All-America Team, it was announced today. Cal Poly standout wide receiver Ramses Barden was named to the first team, giving the junior a place on the first team of every post-season All-America team announced this season by various organizations. Named to the second team was Cal Poly center Nate Safe and North Dakota State runningback Tyler Roehl. Third-team selections were South Dakota State Tyler Koch at the cornerback position and NDSU players Joe Mays at linebacker and Nate Safe at offensive tackle. (more)

LAMB CHOSEN AS NEW HEAD COACH AT SOUTHERN UTAH

Southern Utah University has named Ed Lamb as its new head football coach, SUU Director of Athletics Ken Beazer announced today. Lamb, who is currently special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach at the University of San Diego, will take over the reins of the program immediately. "We're very happy and excited to name Ed Lamb as the new head football coach at Southern Utah University," Beazer said. "We had tremendous interest in the job and looked at a lot of candidates before focusing in on Ed as our man. I have confidence he will step in and get our program going in the right direction." A 1996 graduate of Brigham Young University, Lamb helped guide San Diego to three consecutive Pioneer League championships as well as back-to-back NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championships, in 2005 and 2006. In 2007 The USD special teams ranked first or second in every statistical category and the defense finished 2006 ranked fourth nationally after completing an 11-1 season. (more)
